" Listen to the tracks and see what comes."

That's the request the music producer Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) made of David Lynch upon presenting the filmmaker with a new project — an album called Dark Night of the Soul.

"He said, 'David, I know you don't have time to do videos, but maybe still photographs for each song?'" Lynch recalls.

" In music, hiding in there, is so much, and you just sit and listen to the tracks and these images come. "

The songs on Dark Night of the Soul were created by Danger Mouse and musician Mark Linkous, better known by his stage name, Sparklehorse.

The compositions were then farmed out to performers including Iggy Pop, the Flaming Lips and The Shins' James Mercer, who supplied the vocals and made their own contributions to the music.

Lynch himself even sang on two of the tracks.

"In music, hiding in there, is so much," says Lynch, explaining his creative process to NPR's Scott Simon on a tour of the Michael Kohn Gallery show.

"You just sit and listen to the tracks, and these images come."

Many of Lynch's photographs feature dramatic visual distortions that recall the sometimes impenetrable mysteries of Lynch's films.

"Life holds many, many mysteries — abstract things that we all think about," Lynch says.

"In a film, when things get abstract, some people don't appreciate that, and they want to leave the theater.

Others love to dream, get lost, try to figure things out.

I'm one of those people."

It took more than a year of closely guarded negotiations, but Dark Night of the Soul, the mysterious album from Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and David Lynch, is finally getting an official release.

Dark Night of the Soul was initially announced in the spring of 2009, but never came out because of an unspecified dispute between EMI Records and producer Brian Burton (a.k.a. Danger Mouse).

That dispute has since been resolved, and the album will now be released on July 13.

Until then, you can hear the whole thing here as part of NPR Music's First Listen series.

. Stephan Crump And Rosetta Trio . "Reclamation"

"Reclamation"
  • Liberty Ellman · acoustic guitar
  • Jamie Fox · electric guitar
  • Stephan Crump · acoustic bass

Bassist Stephan Crump, a member of the critically acclaimed Vijay Iyer Trio, released Reclamation this year.

It's the second recording of his chamber-jazz ensemble, Rosetta Trio, an all-string band of bass and two guitars.

They play Crump's original music, and they do it well.

Rosetta Trio comes on like a quiet power trio, one that presents melodic material with aural elegance and no artifice.

In "Memphis," we hear Crump's ode to his hometown, dipped in a country batter, deep fried with intellect and set to a leisurely pace by three New Yorkers.

There's beauty in "Memphis," from its gently lilting melody to the fact that Stephan Crump and Rosetta Trio deliver it with an undercurrent as strong as the Mississippi.

Memphis-bred bassist/composer Stephan Crump is a rising star on the New York music scene.
As collaborator with mainstream jazz luminaries, downtown explorers, singer/songwriters and others, he has become known for the elegance and purposeful groove of his acoustic and electric bass playing.
As a composer, he is emerging as a singular voice.

Shunning barriers of musical genre, Stephan has performed and recorded in the US and across the globe with a diverse list of musicians- from Motown legends Ashford and Simpson to Portishead's Dave McDonald, The Violent Femmes' Gordon Gano, Michael McDonald, Patti Austin, Jorma Kaukonen, Lucy Kaplansky, Mahavishnu Project, Big Ass Truck, Dave Liebman, Billy Hart, Sonny Fortune, Greg Osby, Kenny Werner, Bobby Previte, and late blues legend Johnny Clyde Copeland.

Currently, Stephan can be heard as a long-standing member of Vijay Iyer Trio, Jim Campilongo Electric Trio, Jen Chapin Trio, Liberty Ellman Quartet, Joel Harrison's Harbor, and his own Rosetta Trio.

While aintaining a busy schedule as sideman, Stephan remains intensely involved with composing and performing his own music, which can be heard in Miramax, HBO, Showtime and Simple Focus films, and on his four albums as leader, Poems and Other Things, Tuckahoe, Rosetta and Reclamation, all of which have enjoyed critical acclaim and made strong impact on jazz radio across the country.

Stephan was raised in music.
His mother, an amateur pianist from Paris, and his Memphian father, an architect and jazz drummer, provided a home rich with their native cultures, French and Southern.
After numerous years of classical piano study and two years on alto saxophone, Stephan picked up the bass guitar in his early teens and was soon performing in festivals and touring the Southeastern U. S.

Before leaving Memphis for college, Crump co-led a jazz/rock trio which performed and recorded his original compositions.

Stephan received his Bachelor of Music degree from Amherst College, where he studied under Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Lewis Spratlin and was awarded the Sundquist Prize for performance and composition.

At Amherst he began studying the acoustic bass, with a focus on classical training that culminated in a year of study abroad in Paris with Gary Karr-protégé Patrick Hardouineau.

His jazz studies at Amherst included work with Max Roach, Frank Foster, and Ray Drummond.
After college, he moved straight to New York and for a time continued studies with bass virtuoso Michael Moore.

Crump recently launched his solo performance career as an invited artist at the 2009 International Society of Bassists conference.

2010 will also bring the release of new recordings documenting his free-improvised duo collaborations with both alto saxophonist Steve Lehman and pianist James Carney.

Stephan is an enthusiastic endorser of Velvet strings, Reverend basses, AMT acoustic bass microphones, Aguilar bass amplifiers and David Gage's Czech Ease travel bass.

" Memphis,"  " Overreach," " The Leaves the Rain " and
" Silogism."

Listen for a certain bareness in emotion. It's... pure.

. Histoire De Charlotte Gainsbourg .

For IRM, Charlotte Gainsbourg teamed up with Beck, who co-wrote and produced the record.

May 11, 2010

I was a little nervous to have actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg visit KEXP back in April, partly because there's a huge poster of Serge Gainsbourg's Histoire de Melody Nelson .

That could have made for an awkward introduction: "Nice to meet you, Charlotte.

Hey, look, it's your mom, Jane Birkin, topless on the cover of your dad's groundbreaking album!"

Instead, I met Gainsbourg and her band down in our performance space, where they'd gathered to treat our listeners to a stripped-down acoustic set.

She was visibly shy and nervous, and I learned that this was not only her first real tour, but also her first-ever live on-air session.

But once the music started, Gainsbourg really seemed to lose herself in the dreamy tracks from her third solo album, IRM, which gets its title from the French term for what Americans know as the MRI machine.
Gainsbourg had a near-death experience in 2007, but as she explained, the sound of the MRI scan helped influence her latest album, and her collaborator Beck helped her spin that frightening situation into these beautiful songs.

It was also a delight to talk to Gainsbourg about her legendary father.

She lit up, talking about her earliest memories of his music, and how his popularity has grown since his death in 1991.

And I couldn't hold back from telling her that I felt her dad would be proud of her music, too.

. Zawinul Medley by RICHARD BONA .

Joe Zawinul, with his trademark crocheted skull cap, in concert in Marciac, France,

in 2002.

November 27, 2008 from WBGO -

Concert Pick :

In an exclusive live moment from the 2008 Basel Jazz Festival, Richard Bona salutes his great friend, the Viennese keyboard maestro Joe Zawinul (1932-2007).

Bona says that Zawinul — who worked with Miles Davis and bassist Jaco Pastorius in Weather Report — was the only one who called on every birthday, no matter where Bona was, with the gruff message "Happy birthday, [unprintable jazz-world term of male bonding and affection]."

Bona turns a colorful quilt of Zawinul themes into a moving tribute.

Personnel

  • Taylor Haskins : trumpet

  • Adam Stoler (Long Island, N.Y.): guitar

  • Etienne Stadwijk (Surinam): keyboards

  • Samuel Torres (Bogota, Colombia): percussion

  • Ernesto Simpson (Havana, Cuba): drums

About Richard Bona

Richard Bona was born in 1967 in Cameroon, has lived in Paris and now in New York, and performs worldwide.

But he is so personal with his fans that he answers their e-mail on his website.

The vocalist and bassist has been Harry Belafonte's musical director and has worked with the Joe Zawinul Syndicate, Steps Ahead with Mike Mainieri, the Pat Metheny Group, Mike Stern and the Jaco Pastorius Big Band, a noteworthy gig considering Pastorious' massive influence on jazz bass.

Bona opens his concerts with just his voice, invoking the spirits.

Then he brings on the band and begins to rock the house at the 2008 Basel Jazz Festival in Switzerland.

His band members come from Surinam, Colombia, Cuba, New Hampshire and Long Island, and can go many directions — reggae, African, Euro-jazz, son montuno, to name a few.
Bona's lyrics are in his native language, Douala.

In the middle of the show, Bona sets his bass aside and uses pedals to loop and layer his voice.

He sounds like a one-man Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

"Harmony is colors," Bona says.

"You're just painting with sound."

Then the percussionists return, leading to an audience sing-along and a big finale to a totally satisfying concert.

Set List

  • "Ekwa Mwato" (Bona)

  • Zawinul Medley (Bona/Zawinul)

  • "Sama Duma" (Bona)

  • "Solo Los Dos" (Torres/Simpson)

  • "O Sen Sen" (Bona)

  • "Djombwe" (Bona)
